====================
The last three years have been challenging; not very easy going for small businesses, but here we are. The coronavirus outbreak increased our awareness of arrangements for most of our activity on the Farm, and to be very careful about many of our customary habits. We're continuing to encourage people to visit and walk around the entire Farm but we are emphasising safety. This year we're increasing our vegetable and turkey production; and there's a few new faces among the 20 or so people who live at the Farm.
Radford Mill is a 115 acre farm managed to certified organic standards since 1976. The Cam Brook runs down the middle of the Farm,, and so does the Somerset Coal Canal. About 90% of the Farm is grassland, and half of that is used by a neighbour farmer for grazing, silage and hay.
See our blog at: radfordmillfarm.co.uk
The Mill is at the eastern end of the Farm and we've re-built and renovated the first floor with craft workshops, and the top floor is intended for public functions. The grand plan is to generate heat for all the buildings, the Piggery and Kitchen, and the polytunnels, with a District Heating systerm; how to fuel this system is still open - - the front runner seems to be wood we grow here on the Farm, but we're also considering ground and water-sourced heat pumps, a big solar PV array., and a wind turbine. Watch this space !
We host quite a few events each year – weddings, family parties, small music festivals, workshops and courses on a variety of subjects. We have a market garden enterprise utilising six large polytunnels and about five acres of land, an orchard and a soft fruit field. We produce a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, flowers and salads, all certified organic, throughout the year. We press and bottle apple and grape juice most years. We also harvest hay for our livestock, and our willow withy beds are now home to over 3000 willow trees of 9 different varieties, for bio-fuel, hedging and fedging, purifying water and for weaving. We actively propagate and plant out native hardwood trees every year; we have been propagating and planting oak trees for many years, rather more than a thousand so far, and we are now planting out several hundred oaks saplings every year. The Farm owns and operates the Radford Mill Farm Shop, at 41 Picton Street, Montpelier, Bristol where much of our produce is sold.

Currently we are focusing on renewable energy ideas – wind, water, heat from composting, and solar – and this goes along with a renewed awareness about minimising our consumption and exploitation of the environment, emphasising bio-diversity and avoiding waste throughout the farm. We've excavated about 1/3 mile of the Somerset Coal Canal and we would like to see the whole of the Canal restored to navigation - - all 9.6 miles of it. We think this might take 10 or more years, but it is a wonderful heritage project.
Over the last 47 years Radford Mill Farm has hosted hundreds of events, from circuses to classical concerts, courses, mini-raves, creative festivals, wedding receptions, camping parties, and workshops. During that time we have produced beef, lamb and mutton, pork, yoghurt, turkeys at Christmas, tree saplings, eggs, lots of vegetables, apples and apple juice, yoghurts, jams, chutneys and fruit juices. We'll begin selling cider vinegar next year.
We have hosted large numbers of volunteers, mostly through the WWOOF organisation for more than 40 years, whose help and enthusiasm enliven our community and greatly assist with farm work. They take on all manner of tasks, a good deal of weeding, pruning, building projects and harvesting. We couldn’t manage without them!
Creating links with the local community is a strong focus of the farm that has developed and we prefer to sell our produce locally. As we work with schools, conservation groups, local arts organisations and residential homes Radford Mill Farm has become a well known and vital part of the community.
